so yeah, perhaps some of you follow nutbladder’s subs for hidamari sketch, and when you happily opened it up, you found gems such as…
‘your chopsticks are stopped DONGS’ or ‘Sae line needs translation’
the way such obvious errors came about makes an interesting and somewhat complex story, so i thought i’d post it here, as it gives insight into how fansubbing works as well.
it all began in the usual fashion. The translator finished the translation and by the time i got around to it for editing, he had signed off to sleep/do whatever. While this is inconvenient while editing, it’s not necessarily critical. there were several lines with issues, so i just made notes in the script and posted it online as usual. I was incredibly tired at this point, so i went to sleep for a few hours.
This is where the first issue happened. since i was gone, they used my notes and hashed out the correct translations while i was still asleep. the timer then applied the changes to the script and gave it a slightly different name, so that there were two edits online. A little after this, i woke up and the QCer showed up too.
Now we run into a second issue. the QCer worked on the corrected script, made a report with his changes, and posted them online for me to apply what i wanted. Nothing special here, except that i make a critical mistake. When i opened the file to apply, i accidentally opened the file that didn’t have the corrected script. When i QC, i usually just jump to the lines that need fixing and work on them. Since i didn’t look at the other lines, i didn’t notice that there were some incredibly obvious errors. I think uploaded with the changes, and we released. the rest is history.
so, if it was tl;dr, the summary of it is that i made a stupid mistake and the internet got to laugh a bit at it. I’ll probably change a few things up procedurally so that it doesn’t happen again.
